Inauguration of the academic year 2017-2018

Aula Magna, Milan campus

On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, the inauguration of the 97th academic year of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore took place. According to tradition, the day opened with the Eucharistic celebration in the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio presided over by the Archbishop of Milan, Monsignor Mario Delpini (read the homily), to which the General Ecclesiastical Assistant, Monsignor Claudio Giuliodori, addressed his greetings .

In the setting of the Aula Magna, the Rector Franco Anelli gave the inaugural speech, dealing with fundamental issues for the entire university community and underlining the important role of the University also at national and international level. "We note with satisfaction that our University   continues to gain the trust of students, but precisely because of the burden of responsibility that this entails, we are obliged to ask ourselves how we can welcome them and what we must teach them, with what methods and tools. These are questions that it would be simplistic to refer only to the obvious need to incorporate scientific advances into study programmes, or to the need to direct training with attention to future 'outlets', to the employability of graduates, but which call into question the anthropological dimension". "For a university, cultivating positive relationships with its alumni, who live and work, often with significant roles, in the globalised world, can also be important for intercepting and adequately interpreting the cultural, economic and social transformations on which I have previously dwelt".

The greeting of the President of the Giuseppe Toniolo Institute for Higher Studies, Monsignor Mario Delpini, who is also linked to the University for his studies, preceded the inaugural address  by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, entitled "Adam, where are you?" Contemporary anthropological questions.
